Cough and Cold Tea

November 27, 2019 By Kris Kelly

A nagging cough and sore throat is never fun over the holidays. As many of us have discovered, over-counter remedies often aren’t as effective as we would like, leaving us frustrated and exhausted.  Over the years, I’ve treated many colds and coughs with my own homemade remedies and have found these “mommy concoctions” to offer fast relief.  If you find yourself with a scratchy, sore throat and nagging cough, give our simple Cough and Cold Tea a try.  It’s soothing, easy-to-make and tastes delicious!

Basics of Raw Honey for Healing

  1. Raw honey is never heated or processed, thereby preserving the nutrition.
  2. Contains essential enzymes, vitamins and antioxidants.
  3. Contains anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
  4. Local honey is often used to improve seasonal allergies.
  5. Note:  Although, I typically stick to a vegan diet, including supplements and remedies, honey has become a staple in my own “medicine” cabinet. Although Manuka honey is my absolute favorite, local honey works as well.

Benefits of Thyme

  • Antiseptic and antibiotic properties
  • Helpful for colds and coughs.
  • Delicious when added to a warming tea.

Cough and Cold Syrup

By Kris Kelly Published: November 27, 2019

A nagging cough and sore throat is never fun over the holidays. As many of us have discovered, over-counter remedies often aren't as …

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup local raw honey or Manuka honey
    • 1 large lemon peeled and sliced
    • 1-2 inches fresh ginger root peeled and diced
    • 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme

    Instructions

    1. Place the lemon, ginger and thyme in a clean jar.
    2. Top with honey and give a good stir.
    3. For tea: Place 1 tablespoon syrup with a few pieces of the lemon and ginger in your tea cup. Top with warm water and sip slowly.
    4. For sore throat: Use 1 tablespoon of syrup and let drip down the back of your throat. Very soothing. If too strong, make tea instead.
