Green My Life – Holiday Decorations

December 12, 2014 By Kris Kelly

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…and time to Green My Life – Holiday Decorations style.  I hope everyone is making a list for Santa, trying out a few of our gluten-free and vegan cookie recipes and finishing those pesky assignments at school.  We’re almost there…Christmas Break!

A few quick tips while decorating this season:

  1. Make your own ornaments from items you have around the house.
  2. Use eco-friendly packaging materials.
  3. Use LED lights on your tree and around your house.
Part of getting ready for Christmas at our house is creating a homemade ornament each year.  I hope you’ll give it a try!
  • The only criteria is the ornaments must be created from items you have around your house.  It’s a fun project to do with your family or friends and helps reduce your eco-footprint.  Pinterest is a great place to get inspired!

We found these cute flower ornaments on Pinterest and made them for our tree this year.

Other materials you might have that make festive ornaments: (don’t forget the glitter)

  • feathers
  • flowers
  • pinecones (see our glittered pinecones below – found these on a walk with my mom)

Other ways to “Green” your Christmas:

  • Did you know sending your packages by ground helps reduce fossil fuel use and pollution!  It’s actually six times more efficient than shipping by air. Before mailing your packages, fill them with eco-friendly packaging materials:  real peanuts (in the shell), crumpled up paper (newspaper or magazines), and plain-0ld popcorn.  This not only helps cushion your gifts but reduces the impact on the planet. A win-win!
  • Did you know LED lights are the way to go when decorating your tree?  According to HGTV, “LED Christmas lights are brighter, cool to the touch and, if one goes out, the rest stay lit. Plus, they’re entirely eco-friendly and save money on your electricity bill.”

I hope everyone has fun shopping, wrapping, eating cookies and enjoying your families this season!

Much Love and Merry Christmas!
Faith
